Pottery in the Levant: Production and Circulation in the Southern Levant

13.05.2026 | 10:00

Workshop mit Gunnar Lehmann (Ben Gurion Universität)

This workshop explores the role of pottery in reconstructing economic, social, and cultural processes in the Levant, with a focus on the Southern Levant from the Middle Bronze to the Iron Age. Ceramics are approached not only as chronological markers, but as evidence for technological practice, regional interaction, and systems of exchange.

The workshop addresses typology and fabric analysis by combining macroscopic study with petrographic and chemical approaches. Particular attention is given to regional production, as well as the interplay between local traditions and supra-regional styles. Case studies from key sites illustrate how ceramic assemblages reflect mobility, trade networks, and shifting political structures.

The workshop is open to BerGSAS PhD candidates, students of archaeology at Freie Universität Berlin, and external participants (subject to availability)
