Pottery Network: "Ceramics and Quantification: An Archaeological Evergreen Revisited"

Jan 26, 2023 | 05:30 PM

Lecture by Dr. Gabriele Puschnigg (Austrian Academy of Sciences, Institute of Iranian Studies)

Quantification of pottery is still a topic for discussion in archaeology. Over the past decades, different approaches and measures have been proposed, but even today there is no universal agreement on a single ‘best practice’ amongst archaeologists. This relates to distinct scholarly traditions as much as to the varying archaeological situations and specific material qualities of assemblages.

Starting with a brief outline of the most prominent ways of ceramic quantification currently in use, I will discuss the general benefits of a quantitative approach in pottery studies and illustrate how I applied this kind of data to tackle various research questions.
