Plotinus' Courses and Discourses

Scholarship on Plotinus' Enneads, arguably the most influential philosophical texts of Late Antiquity, has primarily focused on their philosophical content. My project investigates the Enneads as texts and Plotinus as both a philosophical author and teacher. I examine how his treatises reflect their origin in a pedagogical setting and how Plotinus constructs philosophical inquiry as a collaborative activity through reader-inclusive language, metaphor and genre hybridity. Drawing on cognitive-linguistic approaches, including common ground management, cognitive metaphor theory and genre theory, this research aims to provide a better understanding of the communicative strategies and reader-oriented character of Plotinus' writings, while contributing to a broader understanding of the formal dimensions of ancient non-literary texts.
