Urban Spaces: Formation & Transformation in Ancient Sicily and Southern Italy

Oct 27, 2023 - Oct 28, 2023

Conference

The conference's primary objective is to facilitate a gathering where young international scholars can come together to exchange their research findings and innovative ideas. This event will provide doctoral candidates, postdoctoral researchers, and scholars from Austria, Germany, Italy, and Switzerland with a platform to present their research, all directly related to the rich history of ancient Sicily and Southern Italy.

Each presentation will have a 30-minute slot to delve into their topics. Geographically, our scope ranges from Monte Iato in northwestern Sicily to the Salento region in the east of the Italian mainland. Chronologically, we'll explore the diverse historical eras, from the indigenous settlements of the archaic period to the earliest foundations of Greek colonies, all the way to the Roman era, including its ports and opulent bathhouses.

This conference continues the tradition of annual meetings that bring together young scholars passionate about the fascinating history of ancient Sicily, a tradition that has been thriving since 2020.

We are proud to announce that this two-day conference in Berlin is made possible through the generous support of the Berliner Antike-Kolleg (BAK) and is hosted within the framework of the Berlin Graduate School of Ancient Studies (BerGSAS).
