Unsere jährliche Abendveranstaltung "Berliner Antike in ... – Personen und Objekte" findet dieses Mal im Leibniz-Saal in der Berlin-Brandenburgischen Akademie der Wissenschaften. Wir freuen uns, dass wir Rubina Raja, Professorin für Klassische Archäologie und Kunst an der Aarhus University als Keynotespeakerin begrüßen können.

Ein weiterer Höhepunkt des Abends ist die feierliche Zertifikatsübergabe an die Absolventinnen und Absolventen der Berlin Graduate School of Ancient Studies. Anschließend laden wir zu einem Umtrunk ein, der Gelegenheit zu anregenden Gesprächen und Begegnungen bieten wird.

"(De)Constructing Cultural Narratives through Archaeological Archives"

Archaeology is often thought of as a discipline producing objective data, since the field’s empirical evidence comes straight from the ground. Recent research into the documentation that archaeological fieldwork produced in the period between the late 19th and middle of the 20th centuries, however, has challenged such narratives, with profound repercussions for the understanding of a formative period in which an urban archaeology came into existence. It has also begun to disentangle the ways in which the past was deliberately constructed in certain ways through the physical deconstruction of ancient sites. This lecture takes its point of departure in some of the “Big Digs” in the Eastern Mediterranean, where recent investigations into archival materials have shown how a vision of the “urban” and its place in the modern perceptions of the classical world was forged through such excavation projects and how they still resonate today.
