Public engagement in Classical archaeology is the practice of presenting archaeological and art‐historical and historical evidence and its interpretations to the public. It seeks to engage the interest of the public, passing on either academic knowledge in an accessible form or glimpses of the experience and challenges faced by curators, archaeologists and art historians in their own work. The 'Material Cultures in public engagement' project investigates the range of strategies and ideas currently employed by European Museums with Ancient World collections to engage their public with aspects of ancient material culture. The project follows the completion of an international Symposium in Cambridge during March 2015, which discussed the influence the different pattern of evolution of curatorial and academic disciplines has on contemporary public engagement initiatives and will be accomplished by the publication of an edited volume within 2016.
