Capitolium erat caput mundi: a study of the topographical and historical development of the Capitoline Hill in Rome
The project explores the historical and topographical development of the Capitoline Hill in Rome from the 6th century BCE to the 4th century CE. The Capitoline, one of the most symbolically charged and politically central spaces of ancient Rome, is examined through a holistic and diachronic approach that combines archaeological data, literary sources, and archival documentation. The main objective of the project is to identify and interpret processes of continuity, transformation, and rupture in the urban configuration of the hill. Special attention is given to the spatial organisation as a socially produced phenomenon, shaped by historical circumstances and evolving ideological frameworks. As part of the research, sculptural artefacts and inscriptions from the Capitoline Hill, its slopes and in other places but refereble to the hill are catalogued and critically re-evaluated. Sculptural artefacts and inscriptions from the Capitoline Hill, its surrounding slopes, and from other sites but referable to it, are systematically catalogued and subjected to critical reassessment. Part of the work consists of an attempt to contextualise these elements also topographically, to evaluate and understand their communicative value and their use in space. The study is conducted with the support of a geographical information system (QGIS), that will aid the analysis of the spatial and topographical development of the hill in the different historical phases and will allow the elaboration of phase plans.
The project is funded by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) and is carried out within the frame of the Landscape Archaeology and Architecture (LAA) programme of the Berlin Graduate School of Ancient Studies (BerGSAS). It is supervised by Prof. Dr. Ortwin Dally (DAI Rome/FU Berlin), Prof. Dr. Monika Trümper (FU Berlin) and Prof. Dr. Massimiliano Papini (Sapienza University of Rome).
