Landscape as a Palimpsest – Göbekli Tepe and the Rewriting of Landscapes, Settlements, and Memorial Practices in the Post-Neolithic
The Harran plain and its surrounding mountains represent a landscape with one of the longest sequences of continuous sedentary occupation, stretching back to Early Neolithic Göbekli Tepe. Hitherto, research has focused on the earlier Pre-Pottery Neolithic landscape of Göbekli Tepe, neglecting later periods. The project investigates post-PPN palimpsests of human-landscape interaction within the landscape of Göbekli Tepe and its surrounding hinterland, examining how economic practices, social memory, and material traces shaped its longue durée. Through integrated analysis of surface survey data (quarries, tumuli, rock shelters), later activity on the mound (tumulus, cemetery, pottery, and metal objects), 3D-measuring, GIS-based spatial modelling (viewsheds, Euclidian distance), and comparing textual and archaeological evidence from the broader region of the Harran plain, the research seeks to reconstruct patterns of land-use and memory-making across time. This repositions Göbekli Tepe not as an isolated Neolithic phenomenon, but as a persistent focal point within a spatio-temporal cultural landscape.
