The political culture of the late roman Republic as reflected in aristocratic anger practices

This project examines the interrelations between the political culture of the late Roman Republic and its crisis, on the one hand, and the emotional practices of the Roman senatorial aristocracy in the 2nd and 1st centuries BC, on the other, using the emotion of anger as a case study. In this context, anger is understood, drawing on the concept of emotion developed by the cultural anthropologist Monique Scheer, as a socially regulated cultural practice that possesses both a physical and a cognitive dimension and is thus open to historical analysis. The study examines how the political developments of the years 133 to 27 BC influenced the practices of anger employed by the senatorial elite and, conversely, how these practices of anger shaped the development of political culture during this period.
