From Mistra to Italy. Scholarly Practices and Cultural Transfer in Light of Sign and Text
My research project is focused on Greek and Italian Humanism and on the spread of Greek culture in the West during the 15th century. I investigate in particular the cultural activity of Byzantine scribes and learned men who were trained in Mistra at George Gemistos Pletho’s school from the 1430s and the 1460s and, after the Turkish conquest of Morea (1460), moved from Greece to Italy as refugees. The main goal of this research is to collect texts and copyists who can be referred to Pletho’s milieu in a monographic and systematic study. The connection between this context and these personalities, their lives and their contacts will be reconstructed by the direct analysis of their manuscripts, as well as archival documents, from a philological, codicological and palaeographical point of view.
Das Projekt wird durch ein PreDoc-Stipendium der BerGSAS/Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin gefördert.
