The Divine Method: Collection & Division in the Philebus
In my dissertation, I look at collection & division in Plato’s Philebus, a dialogue often overlooked when researching said method. This method serves two purposes: gaining knowledge and sharing knowledge. To execute it, one compares concepts to one another to see in which ways they are different or the same. I argue against genus-species trees as an accurate representation of said method and expand on already existing accounts by diving into the cultural background of its metaphors and examples.
