Continuity and Discontinuity of Native Egyptian Traditions in Coptic Magical Texts

My PhD subject aims at tracing the native Egyptian traditions in Coptic magical texts. The research focuses on the discussion of a series of seemingly native ideas that are present in Coptic magical texts, either consciously or unconsciously, and the analysis of those traditions that were transformed or assimilated into the religious context of Christianity. The corpus will mainly consist of a magical assemblage from the Ägyptisches Museum und Papyrussammlung of Berlin and unpublished manuscripts from the BNU Strasbourg. In this research, I intend to emphasize the significance of magical handbooks, master texts and the activity of magical libraries and examine the question of continuity and discontinuity of ancient practices through historiolae, phrases, voces magicae and ritual acts included in Coptic magical texts.
