Conferences, Symposia, Workshops and Summer Schools

Events and Public Engagement

The Berliner Antike-Kolleg (BAK) is a centre for the exchange between scholarly research in the field of ancient studies and the broader public. Our in-house events aim at enhancing or critically evaluating research questions in light of current debates. At the same time, we also link the numerous offers of our partner institutions in Berlin.

Our conferences and workshops as well as the lectures of our guest scholars are not only dedicated to the academic exchange but they also address the interested public of the city. In the context of our summer schools, we convey special skills for innovative research techniques or important application areas. Once a year, our open BAK-evening is designed to inform the public about our activities.

A focus of our work lies on new formats for public presentations of research. Together with the Excellence Cluster Topoi we organise a lecture series every semester: in the winter semester 2016/17 the topic is Frühe Ökonomien und Modernes Wirtschaftsdenken. In autumn 2016 BAK has staged the first "Antiquity Slam" based on the successful format of Science Slam.

Our events calendar as well as our newsletter list all conferences and lectures in Berlin that are related to the study of antiquity: the university institutions are featured here, along with the Berlin-Brandenburgische Akademie der Wissenschaften (BBAW), the Deutsches Archäologisches Institut (DAI) or the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin (SMB).
