Berliner Antike-Kolleg: About Us

Berliner Antike-Kolleg

The Berliner Antike-Kolleg (BAK) was founded in 2011 by six large Berlin-based institutions with diverse traditions and distinct social mandates to construct a long-lasting, inter-institutional research and educational infrastructure of a new kind.

The six founding institutions, which have alreadey worked successfully together in the Excellence Cluster Topoi, are:

The close cooperation between the equal members of BAK builds the basis of its structure and goals. It provides the conditions for a common strategical development for the strengthening of the study of antiquity in Berlin/Brandenburg. Moreover, it also ensures the academic and organisational independence of the participating partners.

The Excellence Cluster Topoi has impressively proven that the study of antiquity and the specific research approaches benefit from a supra-institutional framework. BAK builds upon the gained insights and cooperations and develops these further beyond a temporary collaboration into a long-lasting and inter-institutional research platform. Accordingly, the foundation of BAK on 10. May 2011 was a consequent step with regard to the effort to bring already successfully managed research collaborations in the field of ancient studies together by exploiting the resources that are available in Berlin.

The collective initiative undertaken by two universities and four non-university research facilities presents one of the great innovations in the field of the study of antiquity. This joint venture introduced a new level of cooperation that is financed by the participating partners.

Since 2015 and for the following three years, BAK has been receiving a funding of ca. 900.000 euros from the Einstein Stiftung Berlin with the purpose of further promotioning BAK’s research activities and consolidating its existing structure through the establishment of a thematically focussed Einstein Center.
