This research project aims at addressing the issue of late antique medicine through the evidence offered by medical papyri dated from the IV to the VII century AD. The project intends to do both a philological and a cultural-historical research. The examination of the originals may allow to gain unpublished materials and to produce a new edition of the outstanding texts. It may attempt also a reconstruction of the context in which medical knowledge was transmitted in the byzantine era and would point out changes and adaptations in the medical texts, suggesting how new professional genres were developed.
This dissertation project has been conducted within the research group D-2 Mapping body and soul of the Excellence Cluster 264 Topoi.
